The Little New York Kitchen

Since I have always lived in small spaces, baking in a tiny tea room was easy. Here are some of the photos—inspiration photos as well as on site, and lord, we needed to paint that place!—recipes, and tips from when my family had Podunk, in the East Village of New York City. If you remember it, we baked cakes, scones, cookies and savory treats. The New York Times called us “ineffably charming.” Time Out designated our scones as irrestistible. When Podunk closed after 14 years, I moved my kitchen home, where my cat and daughter were waiting. I thought about opening another Podunk. I loved having friends over and serving delicious food. I didn’t love charging them money. :(

You know the best thing about all the kitchens I’d ever been in and all the cooks I’d ever talk to—sharing. So here, we’re giving it away. The famous Podunk chocolate chip cookies recipe, which others have tried to make and some have outright stolen is right here. The scones and all their glorious variations? Cheddar biscuits! You should send out the invitations now, because everyone’s coming over to your house for tea, and you’re going to have the best time ever.
